College Basketball Star Scores 89 Points in Single Game (Video)
Griffin Lentsch of Division III School Grinnell College led his team to victory Saturday when he unleashed 89 points against his opponents.
The final score was 145-97 over Principia College, and Lentsch was on fire. He made 27 out of 55 shots, including 15 three pointers, and 20 of 22 free throws in 36 minutes of game play.
"It's a rare thing when you get in that kind of zone, but when it happens, it's so much fun," Lentsch said to Yahoo. "Your mind is in a zone and you don't even realize what's happening until after. I just tried to keep my mind off how many points I had and to focus on getting open and hitting my shots when I was open."
The star's 89 points were the third most for any level of college behind only Clarence Francis' 113 points in 1954 and Frank Selvy's 100, also in 1954. However, Lentsch set the record for most points in Division III, beating out former Grinnell player, Jeff Clement's 77 points.
The basketball player initially started his night off cold not really hitting his stride until midway through the first half.
Lentsch had averaged a team high 18.3 points per game only playing 16.2 minutes a game. His coaches wanted to start playing him around 30 minutes a game but were afraid to do so thinking he'd use up too much energy for the game, Yahoo reported.
"I came back home, I laid down on my bed, and I was like, 'There's no way I'm getting out of bed tonight,'" Lentsch said yesterday to Yahoo. "I was too exhausted."
Sunday morning he was still cramped up and sore from his previous night’s performance and couldn't get out of bed.
"I don't think I can do this every night and I don't think that would be best for our team," he said to Yahoo. "I think what's best for our team is to keep getting everyone involved and to wear down the other team. That way toward the end of the season when the games start to really matter, we have fresh legs and we're able to go all out."
