'Coming to America' News: Sequel to be Directed by Jonathan Levine and Kenya Barris
First released in 1988, "Coming to America" is one of the most loved classic films. Written by comedian and actor Eddie Murphy, the story brought viewers back to what romantic comedy films were like in that decade. Years later, reports have revealed that Hollywood is planning a long-awaited sequel. Although the premise is yet to be revealed, the upcoming film has already gained directors and writers to make up the initial team.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonathan Levine has been tapped to direct the sequel of "Coming to America." Levine is known for his work as a writer in "Warm Bodies," "The Night Before," and "50/50." His latest project was his directing stint that brought Amy Schumer's "Snatched" to TV. Levine is set to team up with Kenya Barris, who is known for writing "Girls Tip," "Black-ish," and "America's Next Top Model."
Considering that both directors are award-winning and critically acclaimed, "Coming to America 2" is facing high expectations. Given that the original release was criticized for its lack of originality despite its captivating comedy, writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield have their work cut out for them. Fans are expecting to see something different yet familiar, especially since the sequel's writers are also the ones who penned the original.
Meanwhile, Deadline reports that Murphy will be involved in the project. Although nothing is finalized yet, Paramount is rumored to be in talks with the actor. The details of the plot of "Coming to America 2" have yet to be released but fans are expecting to hear more details in the coming months.
There is no release date yet for the "Coming to America" sequel. However, because Paramount is still building the crew, fans may have to wait until late 2018 to early 2019 to see the follow-up of their favorite classic comedy.
