Commodore 64 Mini News: Devs Announce Full-Size Console Takes Back Seat

Retro Games recently explained that the Commodore 64 Mini console will be released first before its full-size version.

The Commodore 64, also known as the C64, is an 8-bit family computer that was first released in 1982. The success that Nintendo is getting from recreating their original, classic consoles has obviously inspired the recreation of the C64.

Last year, Retro Games started a crowdfunding campaign with the goal of reaching $150,000 to recreate the full-size C64 console but with added modern features, for example, an HDMI port. However, the campaign closed at a little over $100,000 and was unable to reach the target amount.

So, as Retro Games narrated in a recent update, they needed to adjust their plans by "conceiving more versions of THEC64." Retro Games further explained: "In conversations with retailers it has become clear that the wider retail market is demanding THEC64 MINI more so than our full-size design."

Thus the developers decided to prioritize the production and selling of the C64 Mini console since their funds would then suffice and the expected market demand could jumpstart their other projects that would lead to the making of the full-sized version.

Retro Games promised backers and fans that they will still release a complete console set only with small-sized peripherals. For example, instead of shipping the 40-centimeter keyboard, the C64 Mini will arrive with a 20-cm version. The C64 Mini console set will also come with a joystick and an HDMI cable.

Meanwhile, Retro Games is also preparing a Bonus Gift set for people who have pledged monetary support for the full-sized C64 campaign as well as those who pre-ordered it before Sept. 28. They will receive the C64 Mini set in a slip cover covered in artwork especially designed by the notable retro games cover artist David Rowe.

It is also important to note that those eligible for the Bonus Gift set are getting the full-size C64 keyboard aside from its mini version.

The reborn C64 console will support classic games such as "Anarchy," "Battle Valley," "Bounder," "Hawkeye," "Herobotix," "Impossible Mission," "Mega Apocalypse," "Monty on the Run," and more.

Retro Games has yet to finalize the console's release date.
