'Community' Season 2 News, Update: Joel McHale Talks About the Show's Future
Cast member Joel McHale has confirmed ongoing rumors indicating that the hit television sitcom "Community" will not be returning for another season. However, studio bosses remain optimistic for a reported full length feature film for the show.
Fans may remember the ordeal that the show has went through after its staggeringly low viewer's rating on NBC. After its cancellation, the critically-acclaimed series was picked up for a sixth season last autumn on Yahoo! Screen.
Despite what many believed as a start of a whole new beginning, McHale revealed, in an interview with Metro Weekly, that the show has already wrapped up for good.
"All of our contracts were up after six years. All the actors on the show, almost without exception - their stock has risen significantly and it's out of the pay rate that is affordable to make the show. So you're not going to be able to get (co-stars) Alison Brie or Gillian Jacobs at a normal television salary anymore. There is just not enough money to be able to pay for the show," McHale said.
However this rather undesirable news doesn't entirely rule out the possibility for the show to have a movie.
In a statement released by a spokesperson for Yahoo!, it was found out that the studio is currently in talks with Sony for the project.
"We've seen tremendous value in our partnership with Sony and are continuing to discuss future opportunities for Community," the representative from Yahoo said on Tuesday.
Of course, the idea of a "Community" film isn't entirely new. Back in June, series creator Dan Harmon told EW about his plans for the highly-rated show.
McHale also teased to Esquire that he "really does think there'll be a movie."
"The cast would do it. We would all do it," he said.
"Community" features the acts of McHale, Chevy Chase, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, and Jim Rash, to name a few.
