Conor McGregor Next Fight News: UFC President Dana White Wants McGregor to Face Tony Ferguson

After a brief foray into boxing, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Conor McGregor is finally back where he belongs and his camp has already made it known that they prefer to see him fight Nate Diaz for the third time when he makes his return to the Octagon.

A trilogy bout actually makes a lot of sense since McGregor and Diaz have one win apiece against each other. However, the UFC may not give him the fight he wants this time because a title unification bout against newly crowned UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson appears to be on the horizon.

Ferguson didn't waste any time in calling McGregor out after he submitted Kevin Lee with a triangle choke in the third-round of their UFC 216 bout, and UFC president Dana White seems to agree that the two should face each other next.

"Tony's the interim champion, Conor's the champion, that's the fight that makes sense. It's the fight that has to happen," White said at the post-fight press conference this past weekend, via MMA Fighting.

"Tony's a busy guy. He keeps coming forward, he keeps throwing all kinds of different things at ya. And Conor's awesome. There's no way that's not a great fight. Impossible," he added.

That's definitely an interesting matchup, but will McGregor agree to a fight with Ferguson?

The UFC has always given McGregor the leeway to pursue the fights he wants because he's such a huge draw, so the potential title unification bout is still not set in stone no matter what White says.

In any case, Ferguson seems determined to goad McGregor into fighting him.

"I really want to kick this dude's ass because I believe that my skills are better. I guarantee you that I'd be a better champ and I would defend the belt. He defends the belt zero times," Ferguson said, via MMA Fighting.

Will McGregor fight Ferguson in his return to the UFC? Fight fans will find out in the coming weeks and months.
