'Counting On': Duggars Share Family Wedding Tradition
The Arkansas family shares how new bride Jinger Duggar is the latest in a line of brides to partake in a unique Duggar family tradition, and it has something to do with their wedding dresses. The full episode of "Counting On" is available for streaming online on TLC Go.
The tradition comes from three generations ago when Michelle Duggar, Jinger Duggar's mother, also wore the same gown as Jinger's grandmother, Mary Duggar. The same wedding gown has been carefully kept through all these years, according to Today.
The mother of the bride, Michelle Duggar, explains that the wedding dress is kept in immaculate condition for the purpose of carrying on a unique Duggar family tradition. A piece of the original wedding gown is carefully cut off, and later added to the wedding gown or bouquet of the latest Duggar bride, this time, Jinger Duggar.
In a short clip, Jinger, the new bride, gives more details on this unheard-of family tradition. "There's been a family tradition that whenever one of the girls gets married, they can take a piece of my mom and Grandma Duggar's dress — they wore the same dress for their weddings," Jinger explained. "And so, we take a piece of that dress and incorporate it into our dress," Jinger added, as quoted by Refinery 29.
For the Duggar sisters, the piece was worked into their wedding ensemble in different ways. Jill's piece came with the handkerchief for her wedding bouquet, while her sister Jessa has her heirloom come in the form of a rosette. For Jinger, her piece will be in the form of a heart-shaped piece that will be sewn over the chest of her bridal gown.
"It was neat to see how Miss Renee had so creatively incorporated that piece of my mom's and grandma's dress into my dress," Jinger said.
