'Criminal Minds' Season 12 Episode 16 Spoilers: Reid Fights Back in Prison

Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) is ready to fight and survive in prison in the upcoming episode of "Criminal Minds."

In the episode titled "Assistance Is Futile," the promo shows Reid's new friend, Calvin Shaw (Harold Perrineau), warning him to make a stand before other criminals target him. It seems like the convicts do not like having an FBI agent in their midst. Shaw experienced this before when he was first sent behind bars. He was working with the Bureau when he killed someone out of self-defense. In the clip, Shaw tells Reid that either he becomes a predator or a prey in jail. If he wants to fight back, he must choose which side he is on.

That night, two burly inmates force their way inside Reid's cell. It is obvious they have no intention of letting him live after they are done with him. Reid must do what is necessary to survive. Shaw is offering him an easy way out, but will he take it?

Showrunner Erica Messer has recently warned fans that Reid's predicament would not be ending soon. She told TVLine that they still have a lot to explore in the agent's storyline, so the viewers must not expect Reid to get out of prison that quickly.

"There are a lot of internal and external factors that are yet to come in that storyline so hang on tight," Messner said. She adds: "It's such a fun thing for us to do on this show, because as you know we've never done anything this big of an arc for this long. And to take our most vulnerable hero and put him in the last place you'd ever want him to be has I think got people talking, which is great. We want that."

"Criminal Minds" season 12 episode 16 will air on Wednesday, March 15 at 9 p.m. EDT on CBS.
