Dallas Cowboys NFL Trade, Roster Rumors: Orlando Scandrick to Undergo Left-Hand Surgery, Could Return Against the Cardinals
Dallas Cowboys starting cornerback Orlando Scandrick will have to undergo surgery after he broke his left hand when he tried to make a tackle in the second quarter of Sunday night's game against the New York Giants. However, he's not expected to miss much time.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Scandrick will have a plate inserted into his left hand on Monday to stabilize a broken third metacarpal, and he's expected to miss the Cowboys' game against the Denver Broncos next Sunday. And while there is no clear timetable for his return, Scandrick is confident he will be back for their game against the Arizona Cardinals on Monday, Sept. 25.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett also agree that Scandrick will be ready in no time.
"It looks like they could do some work on it Monday and possibly have him ready for future games. It's something they will cast up. I'm not trying to be dismissive but something I could hope or think he could play with. All I know is they will have to do some procedure and probably give him some protection," Jones said, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
"Hopefully it's successful and we can get him back sooner rather than later. It'll be a day-by-day situation once that surgery is complete," Garrett stated, via the Cowboys' official website.
With Scandrick on the sidelines in the game against the Giants, the Cowboys moved second-year cornerback Anthony Brown inside to slot and he was very productive there. He should continue to play first-team nickel cornerback in the slot until Scandrick gets back.
Rookie Chidobe Awuzie also saw some action at outside cornerback in the nickel defense opposite veteran Nolan Carroll last Sunday, and he should continue to see significant playing time in nickel packages against the Broncos.
