Dallas Cowboys NFL Trade, Roster Rumors: Will NFL File an Appeal to Reinstate Ezekiel Elliott's Six-Game Suspension This Season?
The season might have just started, but football fans would likely agree that a lot was on the line when two National Football Conference (NFC) East powerhouses met on Sunday.
The Dallas Cowboys had lost three consecutive games against the New York Giants before their latest meeting, but with three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. missing the game due to an ankle sprain, Dallas managed to control the game from start to finish.
The Cowboys' defense will get a lot of credit for the 19–3 victory over their division rivals, and rightfully so. However, running back Ezekiel Elliott also reminded everyone why he's a vital cog in the offense as he finished the game with 24 carries 104 yards and five catches for 36 yards. After a turbulent offseason off the field, Elliott is finally back where he belongs.
The National Football League (NFL) has already cleared him to play in the season opener, so he was expected to suit up for the game against the Giants. But Elliott may not have to miss any games this season thanks to United State District Judge Amos L. Mazzant III's ruling last Friday, clearing the way for the running back to play while his case against the league is pending.
Getting a temporary restraining order is a huge win for Elliott, but the NFL is about to make their next move, and ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio has reported that they may file an appeal to reinstate Elliott's suspension.
"Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the league will decide as soon as Monday whether to pursue an appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The goal would be to overturn the ruling from Judge Amos L. Mazzant III blocking the suspension as soon as possible. That would mean, if the appeal is filed and if it succeeds quickly, Elliott's suspension could be reinstated by Week Two, when the Cowboys play the Broncos," Florio said.
The NFL still hasn't decided if they will file an appeal, but if they do, there's a chance that Elliott may still have to serve his six-game suspension this season.
