Tony Romo Expects Dallas Cowboys to Release Him

Tony Romo probably knew that his time was up in Dallas when the Cowboys continued to start Dak Prescott at quarterback last season even after he was cleared to play. With Prescott as the team's quarterback of the present and future, Romo was no longer needed and it was only a matter of team before he leaves.

Observers believe that he's going to be traded, but it seems he might not be leaving via a trade after all. According to ESPN's Ed Werder, Romo is expecting the Cowboys to release him this offseason.

This is an interesting turn of events. If that's true, then the Cowboys don't have to look for a trading partner for Romo. Well, Romo did not say it out loud, but Werder has always been a reliable source and he's not going to sully his reputation on a false claim.

Furthermore, Werder said Romo thinks he can start for two or three seasons more. He will be 37 when the 2017 season starts in September, but he happens to have a lot left in the tank.

So, where could he end up? Romo has been linked to the Kansas City Chiefs for some time now, so they should be one of the frontrunners for his services. The Chiefs already has Alex Smith playing quarterback, but he has played badly last season, so an upgrade may be in order. Sources also say the San Francisco 49ers, the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, and the New York Jets are interested in him as well.

Prescott was supposed to back up Romo when they drafted him, but with Romo sidelined due to a compression fracture in the back last season, Prescott moved up in the pecking order and he hasn't relinquished his hold on the position since. But Romo is going to make his comeback next season and he's probably going to be wearing a new uniform.
