'Deadpool 2' Movie News: 2018 Release Confirmed; Casting Underway

Despite earlier setbacks, the planned "Deadpool 2" movie seems to be finally pushing through with a targeted release date in 2018 along with a new Marvel-based movie, "New Mutants."

In an interview with Collider, producer Simon Kinberg reveals that "Deadpool 2" will start production within this year, and the movie is actually already in the process of casting additional people to play new roles.

"There aren't a lot of new characters, but there are some big ones, as I'm sure you can imagine," Kinberg said.

In addition, the script is being spearheaded by Deadpool leading actor, Ryan Reynolds. "We have a really good script for that movie, and we're into the casting process right now for some of the new characters," Kinberg revealed.

Kinberg also revealed that they certainly have a long-term plan for all Marvel-based movies, but at the same time, they also want to retain the filmmaker's creative freedom, adding that it paid off with Ryan Reynold's first "Deadpool" movie installment.

In other news, David Leitch ("John Wick") is now confirmed to direct "Deadpool 2" after Tim Miller, the director of the first film, stepped away from the project on October 2016 due to creative differences with Reynolds, who was given more creative control for the sequel.

Music composer Tom Holkenborg also dropped out from the project a month after Miller's exit, citing that a "Deadpool" movie without Miller "just does not sit right" for him.

The sequel was originally slated for a March 2017 release date, but due to production difficulties and misunderstandings, it suffered major delays, resulting for it to now be pegged at a 2018 release.

Before Leitch was confirmed to work on the film, he and Drew Goddard ("The Cabin in the Woods") were both strong contenders for the directing role.

Meanwhile, Miller is now working on a live adaptation for "Sonic the Hedgehog" which is also slated for a 2018 release.
