'Deadpool 2' News, Spoilers: Fox Confirms Sequel; Ryan Reynolds, Director Tim Miller to Return
While the people behind the smash hit "Deadpool" have been talking about its much-anticipated sequel for some time, "Deadpool 2" has now been officially confirmed.
On Thursday, April 14, at CinemaCon, Fox co-chairman Stacey Snider announced that "Deadpool 2," the sequel to blockbuster hit "Deadpool," is, indeed, happening.
According to Snider, Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in "Deadpool 2," which is slated as the next film in Fox's Marvel franchise. Reynolds will be re-teaming with director Tim Miller, who made his feature film directorial debut in "Deadpool."
Writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who wrote the screenplay for the superhero blockbuster, are also returning to handle script duties for "Deadpool 2."
Wernick and Reese recently spoke to Hitfix about the sequel and Marvel superhero Cable, who appeared in the "Deadpool" post-credit sequence. As was teased in that scene, the gun-slinging mutant will be featured in "Deadpool 2."
"There's a lot of fun in that he's very serious and he does take on more serious weighty issues than Deadpool's used to taking on, so I think there's a juxtaposition there that can be fun," Reese said.
"We had a lot of fun with Colossus in the first movie, just by virtue of him being a foil to Deadpool, being a goody-two-shoes and a straight shooter and Deadpool being irreverent," he explained. "And I think Cable offers us the opportunity to provide another really cool, different foil for Deadpool."
The "Deadpool 2" writers also told Hitfix that the sequel will neither be "upping the stakes" nor getting "bigger" in the sense of superhero spectacles such as Marvel's "Avengers" or DC's "Batman v Superman." As Wernick explained, they are, in fact, perfectly happy working on a budget much smaller than that of other superhero features. According to the writer, the "Deadpool" films are not about saving the world or fighting aliens. "Deadpool" is a character piece about a broken man and that is what viewers responded to in the first film and what they will, hopefully, appreciate about the sequel.
"Deadpool" will be available in Blu-ray on May 10.
