'Deadpool' News, Cast, Spoilers: Fans Will Be Getting the 'Comic Book' Russian Colossus

With so many superhero movies being made today in Hollywood, criticisms by comic book fans keep growing as well. With every new release, it has become inevitable for fans to compare the movie to the comic book origins. Comic book fans are so well-versed in the story lines of their favorite characters that to make changes — no matter how little — is always a risky move for studios, even with something as simple as a character missing an accent. A good example would be Colossus, the mutant that has fought in previous "X-Men" movies and is now going to be a part of the upcoming "Deadpool" movie.

However, according to Screen Rant, the new "Deadpool" movie will stick to its source, thus fans will finally be getting a Russian Colossus. In the previous films, Canadian actor Daniel Cudmore portrayed Piotr Rasputin, a.k.a Colossus, and only had minor speaking roles, which is why it may have not become entirely too much of a big deal that the character didn't have an accent. On the other hand, in "Deadpool," he will be playing a key supporting role, so writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick felt it was best to have his signature Russian accent that would only make sense due to the heritage of his character. He will also be noticeably bigger — thanks to CGI effects — and will be played by Russian actor Andre Tricoteux.

Director Tim Miller shares with Screen Rant during a set visit in Vancouver how Colossus will come into the picture. He goes, "When [Colossus] shows up you see the Blackbird in the background. It's just a nod to the larger X-Men universe that Deadpool really doesn't want to be part of. He's had his chance." He further explains and assures fans of Colossus' appearance, "I mean, there's a great line where Colossus says, 'you could be a superhero' and he's like 'yeah, I've seen my report card and I don't want to be that guy.' But I like the fact that he's deliberately chosen not to be part of that world, but it's still there. Colossus is going to be great. He's the manifestation of the rest of that universe."

Miller also admits that he was quite bothered why the previous movie's depiction of the character did not stick to the Russian accent that the character Colossus was supposed to have. Later on, VFX Supervisor Jonathan Rothbart also gave his own assurance of what to expect from Colossus as he says, "Russian, yeah. Oh yeah, he's comic book Colossus so he'll definitely be Russian."

"Deadpool" hits theaters on Feb. 12, 2016.
