Demi Lovato, 'I Didn't Twerk, I Went to Rehab,' Actress Says in Comparison to Miley Cyrus

Actress-singer Demi Lovato gave a new interview in which she compared herself to peer Miley Cyrus. She noted the differences between their behavior but noted that she respected Cyrus' path and decisions when it came to her art.

"I think that the world needs to get over the fact that she was 'Hannah Montana' when she was 15," Lovato told Katie Couric. "I guess my transition was a little easier because I went straight to rehab. I didn't twerk, I just went to rehab."

The two young women started out on the Disney Channel but broke away to form their own, independent careers. Lovato has appeared on several well-known series, including "Grey's Anatomy" and "Glee" and recently took a job as a judge on Simon Cowell's "The X Factor." Cyrus, meanwhile, decided to pursue careers in both music and film.

Cyrus came under fire for her performance at the Video Music Awards, where she performed with Robin Thicke. Many viewers called her actions "lewd" and thought they were inappropriate for someone so young, given that Cyrus is only 20 and Thicke is 36 and married. The singer's latest music video for the single "Wrecking Ball" featured her completely nude and swinging on a wrecking ball, again causing controversy.

"I think she knows what she's doing," Lovato told Couric. "A lot of artists take that route of shock value, and that's totally fine and that's great. But I think she has such an incredible voice that's overshadowed by some of the things that she's doing. It's her journey. She's having fun. She's being who she is. I'll always love her. She's been one of my friends since I was 14. But everyone is on their different journeys right now and she's doing that and she's having fun… so power to her."

"I've learned a lot and I've grown up," Lovato added. "And we're all in the process of doing that. So, go a little easy on us, America!"
