Denver Broncos Trade News 2015: Vernon Davis new acquisition from San Francisco
With the hopes of beefing up their championship aspirations, the Denver Broncos added veteran Vernon Davis into their roster.
In a report by the Denver Post, Broncos General Manager John Elway says he has always been a fan of Davis' skills and style of play, adding that the 31-year old tight end could very well be a major asset for the team.
"I have always liked Vernon. He can really stretch the field with his speed and athletic ability. He can be a big weapon for us," Elway explained.
A sixth overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2006, Davis went on to play of the Bay City for nine years. The report adds that there had been rumors about Davis' uncertainty when the 49ers began sliding down the standings. Finally, when his contract expired, the Broncos sent their 2016 and 2017 sixth round picks to the 49ers, as they wait for San Francisco's seventh round pick for 2016.
In another report by ESPN.com, Davis will likely be suiting up for the Broncos' game on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. Davis has so far racked up 441 receptions for 5,640 yards and 55 touchdowns. This season, he has 18 receptions while averaging 10.8 yards per catch.
He also showed signs of struggling since his second 13-touchdown season two years ago. Davis merely had two touchdown receptions the past two seasons, averaging 22 yards pe game.
For his part, Davis was thankful for the new opportunity given to him, noting that what he is looking forward to the most is playing alongside quarterback Peyton Manning.
"All I could think about was Peyton Manning," Davis said during an interview with 104.3 FM."That's all I could think about. Not knocking any of the quarterbacks that I've had in the previous years — Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick, those guys."
"Those guys were amazing, those guys were awesome, but there's just something about Peyton Manning," he added. "I've always been a fan of his."
