The mysterious Catalan has put in motion his plan to assassinate the president of the United States (Kiefer Sutherland) during Congressman Peter MacLeish's (Ashley Zukerman) induction as the vice president.

Agent Wells (Maggie Q) does her best to foil the plan by shooting at the direction where the sniper is at the same time the bullet meant for the head of state was fired.

The bullet strays from the target and hits someone else. Who it is, fans will learn in the midseason premiere of "Designated Survivor" season 1.

The midseason premiere will also see Emily (Italia Ricci) grapple with the idea that there is a traitor lurking in the White House.

As this happens, Agent Wells has a lot of thinking to do as she figures out what she will do with her knowledge about the conspiracy behind the Capitol bombing.

ABC also released the official synopsis for episode 12, "The End of the Beginning," which provide some useful information on how things will go down in the midseason premiere.

"Designated Survivor" season 1, episode 12 will see a new layer of the conspiracy unravel itself and shakes the parties to the core enough to make sure they are intact.

It will also see tension between Aaron Shore (Adan Canto) and Emily (Italia Ricci) brew following the latter's discovery, which suggests that she could finally be close to uncovering the identity of the traitor.

She learned in the midseason finale of "Designated Survivor" season 1 that the presidential chief of staff may be in cahoots with Catalan and the notorious terrorist group Al-Sakar, the people behind the Capitol attack.

Unfortunately, the synopsis for "The End of the Beginning" teases that the identity of Catalan will remain a mystery although the episode will see Agent Wells "closer than before to the truth."

The second half of "Designated Survivor" season 1 will also make way for a "24" reunion as the show brings in Geoff Pierson, Sutherland's co-star in the series, for a recurring role.

He will play the role of Cornelius Moss, the former president of the United States who Kirkman plans to appoint as Secretary of State.

"Designated Survivor" season 1 returns Wednesday, March 8, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
