'Destiny 2' Review: A More Accessible, Open-Ended Game

The launch of "Destiny 2" has been one of the biggest gaming events this year, thanks to the hype and anticipation that's been building up in the months prior to launch. Does the final product live up to players' expectations?

The answer, at least for the new game's first launch on Sep. 6, is somewhere in the middle. Then again, few games could possibly live up to the massive hype generated by "Destiny 2" as its launch date approached in the previous months.

The result, however, is a game with varied and satisfying combat. The role-playing elements might feel diminished in comparison, as Destructoid notes, but it's still miles better than in the original "Destiny."

The first thing that would hit returning players from the first "Destiny" is the attention to general quality-of-life improvements in the game. Whereas the first game was a chore to progress in, needing an external website just to see if any public events are up, "Destiny 2" has everything built in and accessible in-game.

The new structure of "Destiny 2" starts with a series of story missions to get players acquainted with the game's features. After about ten hours in, players are then thrown out and told to have fun with public events, raids, Lost Sector dungeons, PvP, or just simply explore the solar system alone or with friends.

Casual players are well-rewarded with loot, from vendors or drops, without making things too accessible for the veteran players. The top-end gear from the Dark Zones, missions where players can't respawn, and Raids are still some of the hardest the franchise has to offer, as TechRadar notes.

The video below sums up just about everything new players can expect from "Destiny 2." Satisfying combat, simple RPG mechanics and an overall open game structure that lets to do what players feel like doing begin to describe what the new "Destiny" is all about.
