Detroit Tigers Put Mike Pelfrey on the Trading Block

Pitcher Mike Pelfrey has only been with the Detroit Tigers for a single season, but it looks like they may have already given up on him.

Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press has reported that the Tigers are shopping Pelfrey and they have reached out to at least one team recently to see if they are willing to acquire the pitcher. Fenech also said the Tigers are reportedly willing to eat his entire salary (eight million dollars) for this season just to move him.

Okay, it sounds like the Tigers are desperately trying to get rid of Pelfrey, but they are still going to have a hard time looking for a trade partner. He struggled last season and he's not doing any better in spring training. Teams probably don't want to give up assets to acquire a pitcher that's playing terribly right now.

"The Tigers' only hope to trade Pelfrey and get anything back in return would be to eat his salary, and it looks as if they're willing to do that. Even still, the Tigers would be looking at a relative pittance in return," Matt Snyder of Detroit Jock City said in his report.

"Pelfrey is basically a replacement level pitcher at this point in his career. If the Tigers do find a taker they'd be looking at getting something like a low-level relief prospect in return or, more likely, the famous 'player to be named later or cash considerations,'" he continued.

Pelfrey told MLB.com's Jason Beck that he was willing to do anything for the team just to get some playing time, but the Tigers have other plans for him. Right now, the team will continue to trim down their roster and if they can't find a trade partner for Pelfrey, observers believe they may release him instead.

The Tigers already got rid of Mark Lowe and Pelfrey could be the next to go.
