'Deutschland 86' Release Date, Cast and Plot News: Filming Underway in South Africa, Berlin

"Deutschland 86" has just kicked off filming in South Africa and Berlin, and it will pick up three years after the events in "Deutschland 83." Although the new installment will not be shown anytime soon, SundanceTV reportedly plans to release it sometime in 2018.

The award-winning "Deutschland 83" followed a 24-year-old German who was deployed to West Germany in 1983 as a spy. It brought home several accolades, including an International Emmy Award. Its lead actor, Jonas Nay, also bagged the 2016 Golden Nymph for Best Actor at the Festival de Television in Monte Carlo.

Produced by UFA Fiction and written by Anna Winger and Jorg Winger, the sequel will continue to follow the story of Nay's Martin Rauch, his aunt Lenora and their friends at the East German foreign intelligence agency.

Based on the synopsis for the new season, after the East German leadership was abandoned by Moscow, it will find itself lacking financially. Its dire need for money will cause it to push its clandestine operatives to try their hand at global capitalism. After being banished to Africa in the previous installment, Rauch will be getting back to work, encountering enigmatic deals and risky missions that bring him to several countries such as South Africa, Angola, Libya, Paris, West Berlin and East Berlin.

Speaking about "Deutschland 86," series creators Anna and Jorg said, "We're thrilled to bring the series back. This time, we're sending our East German heroes further afield. It's 1986. It's the beginning of the end of the world as they know it. But mafioso-style capitalism just might save the socialist project! The clock is ticking and the beat goes on."

The sequel is directed by Florian Cossen and Arne Feldhusen and will see the return of Nay, Maria Schrader, Sylvester Groth, Vladimir Burlakov, Ludwig Trepte, Alexander Beyer, and other "Deutschland 83" cast members.
