'Doctor Strange 2' Plot Rumors, Release Date: Director Scott Derrickson Talks Sequel's Status, Plot
Marvel has yet to confirm a sequel to the 2016 hit, "Doctor Strange," but based on its success, it seems inevitable that a follow-up will happen. Unfortunately, no one knows when that is going to be - including director Scott Derrickson.
Derrickson, who helmed "Doctor Strange," spoke to Entertainment Weekly about a possible sequel and admitted that he is also in the dark about plans for "Doctor Strange 2."
"Right now, I don't think the people at Marvel are calling anybody for anything," he explained to EW. "They're making way too many movies at once right now [to do that]. [Given] how intimately involved they are in the development and shooting and post-production of those movies, they've got their hands very full right now."
If he were to be approached by Marvel for the sequel, though, Derrickson would jump at the chance in a heartbeat. He explained that he enjoyed his experience directing the first film so much, especially since the people he worked with were all so positive and funny on set.
But Derrickson is right - there are a lot of Marvel films on the conveyor belt right now. As a matter of fact, there are three Marvel titles releasing this year alone: "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," "Spider-Man: Homecoming," and "Thor: Ragnarok," the last of which will also see an appearance by Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange.
As for the plot of "Doctor Strange 2," should it get made, Derrickson revealed to Coming Soon that nothing is off the table. The comic books have a plethora of possible storylines that the film can explore - even those with underlying horror themes - so Derrickson "wouldn't necessarily rule anything out."
The DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, Digital SD, and On Demand editions of "Doctor Strange" will be released on Feb. 28. The copies will include a lot of bonus footage and features like deleted scenes and bloopers.
