'Doctor Strange' Release Date, Cast: Production Underway, Mads Mikkelsen Added To Cast

Marvel Studios has announced that one of the movies which is part of its Phase 3 line up of films, "Doctor Strange," has started production. In a post in Marvel.com, it also confirmed the final cast line up for the film, adding Mads Mikkelsen of "Hannibal" to the cast which already includes Benedict Cumberbatch ("The Imitation Game"), Chiwetel Ejiofor ("12 Years a Slave"), Rachel McAdams ("Southpaw"), Michael Stuhlbarg ("Steve Jobs") and Tilda Swinton ("The Grand Budapest Hotel").

According to Marvel, the film fits perfectly with the goal of the Marvel's Phase 3 because it aims to introduce heroes who many are not so familiar with. The character, Doctor Strange, is mainly known by avid readers of Marvel comics. This film will be the character's initiation into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which already includes the better known superheroes such as Iron Man, Captain America, among others.

"Doctor Strange" is described as a story about a successful but arrogant neurosurgeon, Doctor Stephen Strange, who loses his extraordinary medical abilities when he figures in a car accident. In his desperate search for a cure to his condition, he ends up in the Himalayas where he meets the Ancient One. According to the Marvel comic storyline, he becomes the Ancient One's student in the mystic arts. When he returns to New York after his training, he practices the mystical arts in order to protect humanity from magical and mystical threats.

According to another report in IGN, no information was given as to what role Mikkelsen will play in the film. It has already been confirmed that Cumberbatch will be playing the Sorcerer Supreme/Dr. Strange, while Ejiofor will be playing Baron Mondo, Dr. Strange's archenemy.

The film is directed by Scott Derrickson, who is known for his work in "Sinister" and "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." According to Marvel, the film will have several locations which will include New York, London, Hong Kong and Kathmandu, Nepal. Kevin Feige produces the film with Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Charles Newirth, Stephen Broussard and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.

The film bows in theaters on November 4, 2016.
