'Doctor Who' Christmas Special Poster, Title and Synopsis Revealed
Since 2005, "Doctor Who' fans have been treated to a special holiday episode every year. Some of the specials have been tied to the story arcs in the series, while others are stand-alone episodes which depict the Doctor's adventures based on popular holiday stories.
For this year, the Christmas special will feature a trip to the North Pole. BBC has revealed that the title of the holiday special is "Last Christmas", and in spite of previous rumors that Clara will only have a small role in the episode, the poster and the official synopsis suggests that the Doctor's companion will have a huge part to play as they battle aliens … and meet Santa Claus.
In the 30-second teaser trailer, the scene opens and viewers get a glimpse of an alien creature, and the Doctor says, "It's Christmas, the North Pole. Who you gonna call?" Then, Santa Claus (Nick Frost) makes his entrance, accompanied by two elves.
The teaser trailer spent most of the time highlighting the encounter between Peter Capaldi's Doctor and Frost's Santa Claus, while only hinting at the terrifying creatures in the special episode. Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara on the show, says that "Last Christmas" is "about dreaming—what is real and what is not."
There have been speculations that the title could refer to Clara's last Christmas with the Doctor since show runner Steven Moffat has teased that "anything could happen" with regards to the departure of the character from the series, and he also mentioned that the actress has not signed on for season 9.
Meanwhile, here is the synopsis for "Last Christmas."
"The Doctor and Clara face their Last Christmas. Trapped on an arctic base and under attack from terrifying creatures, who are you going to call? Santa Claus!" the summary reads.
The 2015 "Doctor Who Christmas Special" will air on Dec. 25 on BBC and BBC America.
