'Doctor Who' Season 10 Latest News: Original Cybermen Return for Final Episodes
BBC has recently confirmed that the season finale of "Doctor Who" season 10 will mark the return of the Mondasian Cybermen, the classic villains in the original "Doctor Who" series who were introduced back in the 1960s.
BBC has released a photo on Twitter showing the return of the Mondasian Cybermen. The original cyborg aliens were introduced to the audience for the very first time in William Hartnell's final "Doctor Who" story, "The Tenth Planet," back in 1966.
According to the Telegraph, the original Cybermen will be appearing in the final two episodes – episode 11 and 12 – of "Doctor Who" season 10. It will also be the last episodes showrunner Steven Moffat and lead actor Peter Capaldi will be filming for the long-running sci-fi series aside from its Christmas special.
At a Q&A in 2014, Capaldi was asked which "Doctor Who" villain he would most like to return to the show. Aside from the Axon's from Jon Pertwee's era, he also wanted to see the Mondasian Cybermen on the show during his stint as The Doctor. Apparently, they are his favorite "Doctor Who" villains
"I'd also like to see – this is really one for geeks – the return of the Mondasian Cybermen," Capaldi said at the time. "They came from the Planet Mondas and first appeared in [1966 story] The Tenth Planet. They were absolutely terrifying, with cloth faces. That was really creepy," he added.
In the past, Moffat also spoke about the Mondasian Cybermen, saying that he had no intention of bringing alien cyborgs back to the show.
"We're not bringing [the Mondasian Cybermen] back, because they look like boys with [jumpers] pulled over their heads," Moffat said.
Since then, Capaldi has mentioned the original 1960's Cybermen in interviews. And now, it seems that the "Doctor Who" showrunner has finally decided to give his departing lead star the villain he always wanted to appear with on the show.
Aside from the Mondasian Cybermen, the two-part series finale will also feature the introduction of Pearl Mackie as The Doctor's new companion named Bill Potts. Matt Lucas and Michelle Gomez will also be returning to the show as Nardole and Missy.
"Doctor Who" Season 10 is scheduled to premiere on April 15 on BBC and BBC America.
