'Doctor Who' Season 10 Release Date, Cast News: Peter Capaldi Exits the Show This Year
2017 is going to be Peter Capaldi's last year to travel through time as The Doctor.
"Doctor Who" is a long-time running science fiction TV show produced by BBC that started airing in 1963. The show's story greatly revolves around the adventures of its brilliantly intelligent protagonist known as "The Doctor," an extraterrestrial being who has been time-traveling with his spaceship called the TARDIS.
Talking to BBC Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley, Capaldi surprised fans when he suddenly announced that his days on the show are now numbered. The upcoming season will be Capaldi's last and then he will say goodbye to "Doctor Who" later this year.

Capaldi explained to BBC that he feels "it's time to move on." However, making this decision was not easy for the actor as well, saying, "I feel sad, I love Doctor Who, it is a fantastic programme to work on."
The 12th actor to play the role of The Doctor expressed his high regard for his co-actors and the people who have been working for the series. He shared that production actually asked for him to stay in the show after his contract expires, but Capaldi decided to decline the offer.
"I can't praise the people I work with more highly, but I have always been someone that did a lot of different things," Capaldi explained. He added that he wants to take on a lot of other challenges beyond "Doctor Who."
In the BBC Radio 2 interview, Capaldi graciously thanked everyone for making the time he has worked in "Doctor Who" a great experience, saying, "It's been cosmic."
The 58-year-old actor also shared that working on "Doctor Who" helped him "see the world at its best," and to him, that is the greatest privilege he had in playing The Doctor since 2013.
Over the years, the producers of the show mechanized several terms or arcs to make the change of actors as smooth as possible. Terms such as renewal, regeneration, change of appearance, new cycle of regenerations and more were used in the show.
"Doctor Who" season 10 premieres on a Saturday, April 15.
