'Doctor Who' Season 10 Spoilers: Peter Capaldi Leaving The Show?

It may be time for "Doctor Who" fans to begin choosing a new Doctor to replace the current one.

Peter Capaldi, who plays the Twelfth Doctor after taking over from Matt Smith (the Eleventh Doctor) in 2014, has hinted at a possible exit from the British sci-fi TV program in an interview with The Telegraph.

Capaldi, who is already locked into the show's tenth season, said, "This could be my final year — it's terrifying." He added: "I love 'Doctor Who' but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things. There will come a time when this is over."

The 57-year-old Scottish actor and award-winning film director continued: "But I knew that when I started. I was thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset. That's my terrible melancholic nature."

Capaldi has played the titular character for two seasons and has two "Doctor Who" Christmas specials under his belt.

"When you accept the job you know there'll come a day, inevitably, when you'll be saying goodbye," he said.

As Music Times points out, Matt Smith shared the same sentiment right before he announced that he was saying goodbye to the series, which means that Capaldi fans may be bidding the Twelfth Doctor farewell sometime in the coming year.

But though Capaldi will be missed, die-hard fans of "Doctor Who" know that this isn't necessarily bad news. When one Doctor exits, another immediately enters. And it seems like Capaldi is eager to find out who will replace him when he leaves.

Talking about the various types of actors who have played the role, Capaldi said that each Doctor must be different from the others. Some will be young and good-looking, while others should be eccentric types.

The actor also said that, in his opinion, whatever type of Doctor you are, somebody somewhere will love you, and that if people didn't like his portrayal, another Doctor Who would come along after him. "It's only 'Doctor Who' - and I say that with the greatest of respect and affection," Capaldi said.
