'Doctor Who' Spin-off 'Class': BBC Unveils Cast and Set
The BBC has introduced the main cast for "Class," the latest spin-off of long-running British sci-fi series "Doctor Who."
On Monday, April 4, BBC Three unveiled the cast members and the spin-off's set in a short 360-degree YouTube video.
The new spin-off to the cult favorite time-traveling series is set at Coal Hill School, where the Doctor's (Peter Capaldi) most recent companion, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) worked. The limited series will follow the lives of a group of teenage students as they deal with some unsavory "Doctor Who" characters and monsters while navigating the world of high school.
In the video, "Class" writer and creator Patrick Ness introduces the actors and actresses playing the Coal Hill School students, along with one teacher. He also gives "Doctor Who" fans a glimpse of the half-built set for "Class."
The cast members playing the Coal Hill School students are Greg Austin, Sophie Hopkins, Vivian Oparah, and Fady Elsayed. Though most of the young actors are relative unknowns, some fans may recognize Austin for his role as Gordon Selfridge in the period drama "Mr. Selfridge."
"Coronation Street" alum Katherine Kelly is also in the video. The actress will play the role of a Coal Hill School teacher who is described as a "powerful new presence." She co-starred with Austin in "Mr. Selfridge" and has appeared in a long list of television series, including "Happy Valley," "The Night Manager," and "The Guilty."
In the video, Ness says that the cast is being introduced on photoshoot day. According to the "Class" creator and award-winning writer, principal photography for the show is set to begin a few days hence.
"We searched far and wide for this amazing cast, fantastic actors who understand what we're aiming for with this show," Ness said in the press release for "Class." "And how lucky we are to get Katherine Kelly! She's been stunning in 'Happy Valley,' 'The Night Manager,' and 'Mr. Selfridge,' just wait until you see her here."
"Class" will debut later this year on BBC Three.
