'Downton Abbey' Creator Is Back With Serial App-Novel 'Belgravia'
Writer Julian Fellowes, who is more popularly known for his series creation, "Downton Abbey," is back with another period drama called "Belgravia." Unlike "Downton Abbey" which was serialized on television, this latest creation of Fellowes will be delivered via an app that will bring one episode per week for fans to read and even listen to. According to a report in Entertainment Weekly, this move is not surprising for Fellowes, who is known to use multiple genres in publishing his works.
The app was released on April 14 and according to another report in The Telegraph, Fellowes expressed how flattered he felt to have been asked to approach his work in this manner. He called it "a cross between a novel and a computer game." He added, "I felt it was rather flattering to be asked to do this in my middle sixties – to be the adventurer forging through the undergrowth. It was such a change from Downton."
The app is based on his upcoming novel, "Belgravia" which is set to be released via traditional publishing on July 5. If consumers get the app, however, it will bring them each of the ten installments every week along with bonuses that will only be available in the digital version. Each installment can be listened to as an audiobook. Special features will include period fashions and character portraits of the novel's interesting characters.
According to a report in the NPR, the story of Belgravia centers on two families living in one of the poshest neighborhoods in London. It however starts during an actual historical event, the Battle of Waterloo and it involves the fictional families of the Trenchards and the Bellasis. This is a different era from that in "Downton Abbey." Fellowes described it as "a period where the Empire was expanding, we had more and more markets we could supply, and all of this was generating new fortunes, new men. And these powerful new middle-class rich people were taking the reins."
