'Downtown Abbey' season 6 trailer hints at dramatic end

"Downtown Abbey" is only a couple of weeks away from its sixth and final season, and its recently released trailer hints at a very dramatic end for the series.

The trailer for the last installation of Downtown Abbey will evoke feelings of both sadness and joy in the heart of its viewers, especially with its very melancholic background song. The trailer begins with Lord Grantham, who is played by Hugh Bonneville, talking to Mr. Carson (Jim Carter), and telling him that he could not stop time even if he wanted to, according to E! Online.

"If I could stop history in its tracks, maybe I would. But I can't, Carson. You nor I can hold back time," Lord Grantham said.

There are other scenes in the trailer that point to a tear-jerking conclusion for Downtown Abbey. These include Mr. Carson packing his bags, doors closing and opening, happy and sad faces, and cars whizzing past the screen, the report details.

The trailer also suggests that Edith (Laura Carmichael) and Mary (Michelle Dockery) may have new love interests. Even Thomas (Rob James-Collier) may have a new man of his own, too! Joanne Froggatt's character Anna can also be seen smiling in the trailer.

Hugh Boneville revealed during the Television Critics Association Summer Tour that they were expecting Downtown Abbey to end after the fifth season, but the management decided to add nine more episodes. That way, the series will neither be too truncated nor too stretched, Realty Today reports.

Executive producer Gareth Neame also said they could have made a few more seasons for Downtown Abbey, but they have decided that after season 6 would be the right time to conclude the story. They wanted to leave the viewers a bit hanging, instead of extending until season 8, the report relays.

"Everyone's been completely supportive of Julian and the producers and the cast who all felt that now was the right time. There's no question we could have made a season 7 or 8," Realty Today quotes Neame. "I'm sure they would have been fantastic, but it's about leaving a little bit earlier than you might."

Downtown Abbey season 6 will be released on Sept. 20 in the United Kingdom on ITV and on Jan. 3 in the United States on PBS.
