Dwyane Wade Speaks Up About Cousin's Fatal Shooting 'Enough is Enough'; Investigation Details and Updates
Two men shot Wade's cousin in a neighborhood she just recently moved into
Nykea Aldridge, 32, was pushing her baby in a stroller when she was shot on the head on Chicago's South Side. Aldridge was the cousin of NBA star Dwyane Wade. Reports said that Aldridge was not the target of the shooting.
The mother of four was walking with a stroller in hand when two men walked up and shot a third man. The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Wade tweeted his anger
The basketball superstar took to Twitter his anger. He addressed his cousin's death by saying: "My cousin was killed today in Chicago. Another act of senseless gun violence. 4 kids lost their mom for NO REASON. Unreal. #EnoughIsEnough"
It was just last month when Dwyane Wade returned to Chicago to sign his contract with the Bulls. Wade and his mother Jolinda were both part of a discussion on gun violence on ESPN entitled "The Undefeated." The discussions focused on the experiences of athletes when it comes to violence and the police. The latest conversations were held in Chicago at the South Side YMCA where Dwyane Wade appeared through a satellite feed.
During "The Undefeated" conversations, Wade did not specifically addressed gun violence but mentioned that there was a division in his community. He cited that it is important to help each other and not adapt a mentality about personal survival.
Aldridge new in the neighborhood
According to reports, Pastor Edward Jones, family spokesman said that Aldridge and her kids were new in the neighborhood. She was walking to school to register her kids when the incident happened. One of the men involved in the shooting was caught and was questioned Friday evening.
Chicago's crime rate has increased this year with more than 2,600 shootings in the city. These shooting incidents happened mainly along the South and West areas of the city. As of Wednesday, more than 460 murders have been recorded the number being the largest since 1997.
Wade's hometown is in Chicago's South Side. He lived with his mother who sold drugs. Jolinda has gave up on drugs since she was released from prison in 2003. She is now a pastor and helps people who are victims of violence in her community.
Jolinda spoke about her niece's death Friday as she held her sister close. She channeled her talks through "The Undefeated" with the recent incident and said that she was in a panel discussing about violence in Chicago City not knowing that the next day she would be living and experiencing it.
Dwyane called on the public to put an end to gun violence together with LeBron James, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony at the ESPYS. He said that gun violence should be ended in places such as Chicago, Dallas and Orlando. "Enough is enough."
