EA Takes a Step Back, Stops Making Games for Nintendo Switch

With "FIFA 18" being the only game from EA on the Nintendo Switch library, it is natural to believe that more titles from the game developer are lined up, waiting to be released. In reality, though, EA seems to be moving in another direction.

According to Tweet posted by tech reporter Takashi Mochizuki of The Wall Street Journal, EA is opting to take a step back and re-examine the playing field as far as the Nintendo Switch platform is concerned. EA finance chief Blake Jorgensen told WSJ that they want to see how things go with the console after it has reached its first full year in the market.

Jorgensen noted that they want "to fully understand what the demand is" for "FIFA 18" on Nintendo's flagship console before they decide on developing more games for the platform. Jorgensen said that it is still too soon for the company to judge whether the game is successful on the Switch or not.

Gamespot reported that the Switch has already sold 7.63 million units worldwide by the end of September. If the console's momentum is sustained, it will likely outsell its predecessor, the WiiU, after a year in the market. The report noted, however, that the Switch's install base still pales in comparison to that of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Meanwhile, IGN reported that the "FIFA 18" version for Switch does not have all the features included in its PS4 and Xbox One iterations. The Switch version does not offer the single-player Journey Mode. Moreover, it also did not use the Frostbite engine, which observers feel made the game inferior to its PS4 and Xbox One counterparts.

With the way things are looking for the Switch, there is a possibility that EA will again make a commitment to develop more games for the console. According to the recent report from NPD Group, the console has again outsold the PS4 and Xbox One in September.
