'Elite Dangerous' Multi-Crew Payment Nerf: Frontier Says Balance Is Essential to Maintain Engagement in Actual Gameplay

Video games may mainly be designed for entertainment, but players themselves often forget that these games also aim to foster commitment and perseverance. And combat simulation games like "Elite: Dangerous" is one such game that has recently fallen out of most of its players' favor owing to a recent attempt to bring some of the challenge back to the game.

In a message posted on the game developer Frontier Developments' community forum, senior community manager Edward Lewis responded to the feedback they received regarding the recent nerfing of the crew member mission payouts in the beta version of the Multi-Crew system. Lewis said that they had to balance the amount of credits a player receives after joining a session for reasons that ultimately lead to one common goal: That is, to bring the players back to the basics and reinforce their interest in actually engaging with the game.

"This is something that was designed to teach players how to engage with the Elite Dangerous galaxy, and allowing players to jump into someone else's ship and earn millions of credits in no time at all would allow them to skip this progression entirely and hop straight into a larger ship, without having learned how to make money in normal gameplay," Lewis wrote.

Nerfing the mission payouts will also allow new players to discover and learn the intricacies of the different elements and methods of gameplay in "Elite: Dangerous" and will eventually give them skill sets as well as the hard-earned honor of sitting in the mighty Anaconda, which is one of the most expensive ships in the game and is considered to be the pride of the Faulcon deLacy's shipyards.

iDigitalTimes reported that while some beta players accepted the explanation, others argued this could be Frontier's attempt to add content barriers to a game that has previously been lauded for having only a few community restrictions.

Expect more changes to come to Multi-Crew beta as Frontier polishes up the system before launching it to the public.
