'Empire' season 2 release date, plot news: Cookie gets a new love interest

With the return of "Empire" soon approaching, stars have been sharing details on what fans can expect on the upcoming season.

The previous season ended with Terrence Howard's character, named Lucious Lyon, put behind bars because of his involvement in the murder of Bunkie. With that, the second season will see how the family deals with his imprisonment, as well as the grab for power over Empire Records.

Meanwhile, the second season will have Cookie Lyon, played by Taraji Henson, challenged with another matter. Reports by Extra TV stated that the season will introduce a new romantic affair for her. The character named Laz Delgado will be played by Adam Rodriguez. Fans can expect that the two will have some intimate scenes to spice up the show.
Henson shared details about how they came about inviting Rodriguez to the series. She said they had chemistry from their previous projects, thus making it easy to work with each other. The two had roles in "I Can Do Bad All By Myself."

However, it was stated by Variety that his role will just be a recurring guest role, and not a regular. He was described as a "smooth-talking concert promoter," who is also talented in hustling. He will help the Lyon family overcome their unfortunate situation. Henson also spoke about her character, stating her influences for the role. She explained that she based Cookie on the late father. She said, "He spoke the truth. It is heroic because, in this society, we have been trained to be politically correct. Political correctness is bullsh*t. Cookie does not do that!"

She also shared a teaser video of the series with the caption: "The countdown has begun. Game on. #Empire #YouAintReady." The video shows snippets of a song that said, "It ain't about the money, it's about power." It also shows Lucious behind bars, along with Cookie and Anika Calhound, played by Grace Gealey, in a heated discussion.

Empire will return on air this Sept. 23.
