'Extinction' Casting News: Lizzy Caplan to Star Opposite Michael Pena

Hollywood actress Lizzy Caplan has been cast in Universal Pictures and Good Universe's upcoming science fiction thriller "Extinction."

According to Variety, their sources have revealed that the "Masters of Sex" star will portray the wife of Michael Pena's character in the movie.

The story of "Extinction" follows a man (Pena) who has recurring nightmares about losing his family. The planet is then invaded by an alien force, and the man must find an unknown strength inside him in order to ensure the survival of his family.

The upcoming sci-fi thriller will be directed by Ben Young, while Eric Heisserer, who was recently nominated for his script for the movie "Arrival," will be writing the film's screenplay along with Spenser Cohen and Bradley Caleb Kane.

The movie will be produced by Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman of Mandeville. The latter also backed the highly awaited live action film adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast." Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake of Good Universe will be executive producing the film alongside Mandeville's Alexander Young. Anna Halberg, on the other hand, will serve as the movie's co-producer.

Overseeing the production for Universal will be executive vice president of production Erik Baiers and creative executive Mika Pryce. For Good Universe, the movie will be overseen by Erin Westerman.

Caplan recently starred opposite Michael Sheen in Showtime's critically acclaimed drama series "Masters of Sex." The series told the lives of sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, and concluded its four-season run last fall. For her performance in the drama series, Caplan received an Emmy nomination and a Critics Choice Award nomination for outstanding lead actress.

On the big screen, the actress has worked on movies such as "Allied" (opposite Brad Pitt), "Now You See Me 2," "The Interview," "Cloverfield" and "Mean Girls."

Kaplan will be appearing next in the three-part BBC comedy series "Ill Behavior."

"Extinction" has no official release date yet.
