Eye and Organs National Donor Registration Available in iOS 10 Update; Apple CEO Tim Cook Says Function Inspired by Steve Jobs

Being an Organ Donor is Now a Simple Smartphone Tap Away

The iOS 10 update by Apple will have iPhone users have the option of becoming national donors with just a few taps.

Apple is pushing for iPhone users to become national donors via a new feature. The iOS 10 update is said to come with a sign-up button to the health information app where users can become eye and organ donors. CEO Tim Cook hopes that this feature will increase the spike in donors to help minimize the ever increasing donor shortage instances.

Tim Cook Inspired by Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs
Cook says that the organ donor feature was inspired by his close friend and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Jobs was suffering from pancreatic cancer and was in the waiting list of liver transplant in 2009. NBC reported that Jobs expired from the cancer in 2011, only two years of having a liver transplant. He was advised to get listed in Tennessee as it had a much shorter waiting list than in California.

Organ Donation Sign Up Made Easier with iOS 10
Apple collabarated with non-profit Donate Life America in the hope of increasing organ donation awareness. They hope that with the easier sign-up method, more Americans will become organ donors. The iOS 10 update is scheduled to launch in the fall, Fortune noted.

The feature can be accessed via Apple's Health app in the Medical ID section and it comes bundled in the company's operating system via the iOS 10 update. The app has been a mainstay in Apple products and it is used to store private health data. Information including blood type, body measurements, nutrition, and vitals can be used in case of any medical emergency.

Apple's Organ Donation App More Effective
The reason why the app is bundled with the new update and in Apple's operating system is to attract people to become organ donors because of its convenience. Donate Life America Chief Executive, David Fleming, stated that the iPhone app is more efficient because there is no need to download an additional app to sign up for organ donation. When users sign up via the iPhone app, they are automatically enrolled in the national registry, the Associated Press wrote.

With the iOS 10 update coming to iPhones, would you be willing to become an organ donor when you update your health data in the Medical ID section of the Health app? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
