Facebook Error Logs Out Users; Fixes in Place According to Company

A good number of social media users have taken to Twitter to vent about being locked out of their Facebook accounts. The company claims that it is a system error, and the issue has been fixed.

The tag #facebookdown started trending last Feb. 24 as more and more users have reported that they have been logged out of their Facebook accounts. Normally, it would be a minor inconvenience that could be solved simply by relogging in, but then the social network also started sending out password reset emails to owners of the affected accounts.

The Independent has reported that even after going through the password reset process linked in the emails, some people were still getting locked out of their accounts. According to the report, the social network site would inform people that all of their messages have been marked as spam — a huge problem if the spam filter went and deleted them.

Some account holders are instead being unceremoniously kicked back to the login screen, after being simply told that their accounts have failed verification.

Understandably, some users have started to panic when Facebook went on to release emails saying that their accounts may have been hacked, and that they need to follow a prescribed recovery protocol as soon as possible. Some still went further and assumed that the social media platform has started censoring their users, according to the Daily Mail.

The company released a statement later claiming that the issue is less serious than some may assume. "Earlier today an error in one of our systems designed to help prevent suspicious account access sent a small set of people to our account recovery flow unnecessarily. We have fixed the issue and are in the process of clearing the affected accounts from this recovery flow. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Earlier this month on Feb. 16, Facebook has also experienced a bit of downtime, as reported by users turning to Twitter.
