Facebook Outage From DNS Issue; Social Network Down For 20 Minutes

On Monday, a Facebook outage lasting 20 to 25 minutes took place after Google's Gmail service also experienced an outage lasting 30 to 40 minutes. Facebook has blamed the widespread shut down to a DNS infrastructure issue. The social network was down Monday but up and running smoothly on Tuesday.

The brief shut down of the network affected Facebook's main page and also mobile site, which returned an error message when users tried to load them.

The Facebook API, which lets you install the "Like" button, also didn't work. However, Facebook still functioned on subdomains like beta.facebook.com.

A Facebook representative explained the reason behind the outage in a statement:

"Earlier today we made a change to our DNS infrastructure and that change resulted in some people being temporarily unable to reach the site. We detected and resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100 percent. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Earlier in September and October 2012, Facebook also experienced similar outages due to DNS changes.

The Facebook outage follows a Gmail outage earlier Monday. Users reported that the email service did not load and produced a 502 error page.

The problems with Gmail, which also affected the Google Drive function, started at 12 noon and was resolved a little after 1 p.m. eastern time.

"The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request," the error noted. "Please try again in 30 seconds. That's all we know."
