It turned out that Larcade was nothing more than a demon from the book of Zeref, as the Emperor said so himself. But that only made one-half of the shocking revelation that manga artist Hiro Mashima left his readers with by the end of chapter 526 titled "My Name Is..."
Zeref and Mavis did have a child, but he's not really who everybody thought he was. As the battle between August and Gildarts continued, right alongside the panels featuring the earliest memories of Zeref's true son, it eventually led to the revelation that the Emperor himself has unknowingly met and named his own child, "August."
