'FIFA 18' vs 'PES 2018' Gameplay Review: Which Is Better?

The battle for the year's best sports simulation video game is still tight between "FIFA 18" and "Pro Evolution Soccer 2018."

According to GameSpot, both games have their own strengths and weaknesses. While the Electronic Arts' title is as popular as ever, players have also taken an interest on PES' plucky offering.

When it comes to presentation, however, "FIFA 18" is reportedly the runaway winner since "PES 2018" is still allegedly lacking on the aesthetic front. Compared to other's flashy designs, the latter game falls flat, with its menus unchanged since its debut in 2001. "FIFA 18," on the other hand, is a sight for sore eyes with its improved lightning and character models, as well as the new FUT pack-opening animation.

PES' lack of license is reportedly the reason for this drawback. Since only the versions for the PlayStation 4 and PC allow fan-made kit mods to be installed on them, Xbox players are left disappointed and unsatisfied. With FIFA, EA has made good use of the licenses to improve the game's graphic overlays, team-specific commentary lines and others.

In an interview (via Bleacher Report), EA acknowledged FIFA's standing as the leading sports simulation video game in the U.S. According to a representative, the licensers really see the value of partnering with the company due to its popularity.

"Licensers now see how massive FIFA is and what an important part of the world of football it is. Everyone wants to be involved. Here in North America, if you say FIFA, the majority of people will think of us rather than the actual governing body. A lot of people over here have gotten into football because of us and our game. The rapid growth in popularity of football in North America is in part down to us," EA stated.

When it comes to gameplay, "PES 2018" is reportedly more satisfying to play compared to "FIFA 18." Most of its reviews praised how fluid everything was, especially when it came to passing, dribbling and shooting. "FIFA 18," although a marked improvement from the last version, still had problems with dribbling, which felt "clunky," while passing was deemed "limp and unresponsive." There is also the distinct difference between lower league players and the world stars.

Overall, both games have their pros and cons. It is merely up to the players to decide which is more superior depending on their priorities.
