Fifth Harmony News: Lauren Jauregui Takes a Swipe at Radio Station for Questioning Her Latin Roots

Lauren Jauregui of Fifth Harmony recently took a swipe at a radio station for allegedly contesting her right to claim her Latin roots. The Cuban-American band member took to Twitter on Wednesday night to blast a Spanish radio station for questioning her self-identity.

Recently, a radio station in Spain featured a segment airing an opinion piece that basically questioned the legitimacy of American stars who identified themselves as Latins. The debate as to what makes a person Latino has been around for years, and it remains one of the most divisive issues among celebrities. Jauregui was not the first to fight for her self-identity as Latina. Before her, celebrities like Camila Mendes and Gina Rodriguez also claimed their Latin roots but were questioned.

After the Happy FM radio station questioned Jauregui for her Latin roots, the Fifth Harmony member responded to the station with several tweets, defending her ancestries. "An article based off of opinion. I feel Latina because I was born in a Latin family. I speak the language, I cook the food. I have been part of the Latino community in Miami since I was born; I have always had them around me. Anyone could tell you that," she tweeted.

The artist went on to explain that while most people see her as a little white girl that's far from being a Latina, nobody could tell her what her roots are. She also questioned the radio station about its stand on DACA recipients with undocumented Latino parents who came to the U.S. when they were still young.

Meanwhile, Jauregui revealed in a recent interview with Billboard Argentina the artists she would like to collaborate with in the future. According to her, since she was raised in a Latin culture, she would love to do songs with artists like Shakira, Nicky Jam, or J. Balvin.
