Film Producer Reveals Rey, Finn, Poe, BB-8 to Return After 'Star Wars 9'
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" will mark the second sequel in the new "Star Wars" trilogy, which started in 2015 with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Although the trilogy is supposed to wrap with 2019's "Star Wars 9," Lucasfilm recently revealed that it is exploring ways to continue the saga beyond Episode IX.
As "Star Wars 9" brings the saga of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to a close, fans expect the film to also mark the end of the road for the franchise's classic characters like Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega). However, film producer Kathleen Kennedy revealed in a recent interview that Rey, Finn, Poe (Oscar Isaac), and BB-8 would make a comeback as the "Star Wars" franchise heads into the next 10 years.
Kennedy hinted that fans would get to see the four characters age throughout the years, just as they did with Harrison Ford's Han Solo, Hamill's Luke, and the late Carrie Fisher's Leia Organa. She said she and Lucasfilm are already in talks about the future of "Star Wars."
"We're sitting down now, we're talking about the next 10 years of 'Star Wars' stories, and we're looking at, narratively, where that might go. Future stories beyond Episode IX with these new characters: Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8, but we're also looking at working with people that are interested in coming into the 'Star Wars' world and taking us places we haven't been yet. That's exciting, too, because it's a vast galaxy far, far away," said Kennedy.
It remains to be seen whether Rey, Finn, Poe, and BB-8 would return to the big screen to continue the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" saga or would headline a whole new trilogy that would focus on a different narrative.
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" opens in theaters on Dec. 15, while "Star Wars 9" arrives in 2019.
