'Final Fantasy 7 Remake' Rumors: Changes to the Materia Mechanics May Be Implemented

Battle menu changes could be hinting at how Materia and magic will work inside the 'Final Fantasy 7 Remake'

The "Final Fantasy 7 Remake" will feature a more action-oriented style of combat, and it looks like that significant change may have ripple effects on the new game's other systems.

During a recent interview with Famitsu, director Tetsuya Nomura gave more details on how the remake's battles will actually work.

Gematsu provided a translation of the interview.

After reiterating that battles will indeed be action-based and even teasing that gunners may fight differently inside the game, Nomura then shared something interesting related to the Materia system.

As players of the original game may remember, Materia is crucial to making progress as these give the characters access to new spells and skills that help greatly in battles.

In the interview, Nomura shared that Materia is "something like a skill," and perhaps more interestingly, the director then added that it is "different from magic."

Given that in the original game, the pieces of Materia characters had equipped determined which magical spells and skills they may have, it is unclear if the "different from magic" comment means that the "Final Fantasy 7 Remake" will sever the direct link between these.

Notably, a screenshot of the game that was released recently displays a menu that features Magic and Materia as different options.

It is possible that the pieces of Materia in the game will now only be responsible for giving the game's characters access to special skills, and magic spells may be made accessible differently.

Perhaps developers could create a new magic system for the remake, and this could be one that is independent of the Materia system.

One more thing, there are also types of Materia that grant the characters the ability to call on powerful beings known as Summons, and at this point, it is also not quite clear how these may be implemented in the remake and if they too may be subjected to changes.

More news about the "Final Fantasy 7 Remake" should be made available soon.
