Flaming Lips Record, Most Shows in 24 Hours (VIDEO)

The Flaming Lips have just broken the record for the most shows held within a 24 hour period, surpassing Jay-Z along the way.

Hip hop artist Jay-Z had previously held the record for the most shows played within a 24 hour period when he toured from Atlanta to Las Vegas by bus and held six shows along the way. The post-punk Flaming Lips however set out to break that record on Wednesday evening.

The alternative rock band, know for their psychedelic music composition and space rock lyrics, was originally formed in 1983. In April of this year the band released "The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends," the latest of their albums. The band intentionally set out to break the world record of shows played within 24 hours on June 27.

Beginning their journey in Memphis, the band passed through the Mississippi Delta region setting up camp to play short sets to fans along the way. Topping Jay-Z by one extra city, the band successfully broke the Guinness World Record, playing eight cities in one day.

The event was aired live online as part of the third annual O Music Awards, an exclusive live streaming event.

"When I was 16, this was the dream – the great inclusive adventure of touring." Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne told reporters during a tour bus press conference. "Honestly, I don't think a lot of artists now would look very good doing this."

Conye, who was initially unconcerned with attempting to break a world record later called the band's accomplishment an "absurd joy."

Other performers who joined in during the Flame's 24 hour extravaganza included Jackson Browne, Grace Potter and Neon Indian's Alan Palomo, all of whom hitchhiked aboard the Flame's tour bus in order to reach their new destinations.
