Florida Man Found Guilty After Posting Photo of His Dead Wife on Facebook
On Wednesday, Derek Medina of South Miami has been found guilty of second-degree murder after posting a photo of his wife's dead body on Facebook with a note that explained the reason for his actions.
In August of 2013, Medina was accused of shooting his wife, Jennifer Alonso, resulting to her death. The authorities said he took to Facebook, wrote a note to his friends and family, then posted the message with a photo of Alonso's dead body.
While the defense tried to lure the jury into believing that Medina shot his wife eight times for the need to defend himself, the jury didn't buy all the explanations in about six hours of deliberation over a decision.
According to ABC News, Medina admitted in a videotaped conversation with the police that he did shoot his wife, but only after she took out a knife during a heated exchange at the murder scene.
It is worth noting that on his Facebook post, along with the picture, it seemed that he knew what was coming. Prosecutor Leah Klein also mentioned during her closing argument that Medina "planned to execute Jen."
CNN says Medina explained in his note that he was a victim of abuse for many years under the hands of Alonso. "I'm going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys miss you guys takecare Facebook people you will see me in the news," he reportedly wrote.
After Medina killed his wife, authorities say he went to see visit his family and called the police. As for the photo that roamed Facebook for about five hours, it was taken down by the social media network after receiving notifications from multiple users that Medina's photo had gruesome content. The site also automatically deactivated Alonso's profile, as well as Medina's.
Prosecutors say they will be fighting for a maximum of life behind bars, while defense will be seeking for an appeal for what they believe was a "case of self-defense."
