Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor News 2017: Mayweather Says He's Ready to Step Back in the Ring
A potential boxing match between pound-for-pound boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. and current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Conor McGregor may seem like a freak show to some, but a lot of fight fans actually find it quite intriguing and they want to see the two trade punches in the ring. Both sides have tried to make the fight happen, but so far negotiations have stalled.
In an interview with Showtime, Mayweather reiterated that he's ready to come out of retirement to face McGregor and he said McGregor's camp already knows how much guaranteed money he wants, so there was no need to discuss further.
Mayweather can do whatever he wants, but McGregor is still under contract with the UFC and that may be the biggest obstacle standing in the way of a fight between the two. McGregor will have to convince the UFC to allow him to fight outside the octagon first before any serious negotiation can take place.
Well, McGregor will have to talk with Dana White because the UFC president does not think the fight is happening. Instead, White wants McGregor to face the winner of the UFC 209 fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.
Meanwhile, Mayweather should be the overwhelming favorite in a match between the two, but he disagrees.
"I mean cause every time Conor McGregor goes out there and compete and win, he do it standing up. When Conor McGregor did lose, he lost on the ground. He didn't lose standing up. So he's a hell of a fighter and a very, very tough competitor and he has the will to win," Mayweather said during the interview with Showtime.
"The UFC gloves is no different from boxing gloves, they just a little bit smaller but if a guy got power, he got power and Conor McGregor got power," he continued.
Mayweather is going to say that because he wants fight fans to watch the potential bout, but WBO light middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez thinks the fight is a joke and he doesn't think McGregor has a chance of winning. Boxing great Oscar De La Hoya also doesn't think it's going to be much a fight. Of course, that may not matter because fight fans will still tune in to see the fight.
