'Fortnite' News: Game Coming to Mac and PC, Beta Coming This Fall
There is a new game in town and it's a strange combination of exploring, scavenging, building and shooting. It's like a sophisticated looking version of "Minecraft," according to one report. Polygon in its report says it tries to marry "exploration, building and action into something new."
In Apple's recently concluded WWDC, "Fortnite" and its gameplay was demonstrated as a game that will run on Apple's metal technology. The game's developer, Epic Games, during the demo showed a character "running around a city collecting materials as a huge purple storm brought in a wave of monsters." The demo showed how weather, lighting and destruction effects were happening in real time.
Polygon's hands-on review of the game gives a better idea of the gameplay in store for players. Players enter a procedurally-generated level. The scavenging part of the game involves exploring the area and looking for useful raw materials such as trees and rocks. These need to be collected so that they can be crafted into tools for harvesting and building structures or into weapons to defend oneself. The building goal is to build a protective fort around what is called an atlas device, which the game's monsters are out to destroy.
The shooting part of the game happens after a player has fortified the fort and has activated their atlas device, which is like a portal mechanism of sorts. Only then will all types of monsters come and attack. Players can defend their forts by themselves but co-op play to defend forts is favored. Players will have a wide array of guns, explosives and melee weapons like axes and swords at their disposal and at times, they can unlock after certain achievements.
Players can choose to play a certain class. There are currently four classes: Outlander, Constructor, Ninja and Commando. Each class comes with its own set of skills and weapons.
The game is being developed for PC and Mac only. Those who are wanting to get their hands on the game will be able to do so when it becomes available for open beta testing this fall.
