'Fortnite' vs. 'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds: Bluehole's VP Clarifies What The Issue Is
Developed by Bluehole Studio, "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" has garnered the positive attention of the gaming community since it was released early this year. The developers had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games who developed "Fortnite" because they created the Unreal Engine 4 which is being used in "PUBG."
Recently, Epic Games has announced "Fortnite: Battle Royale," and Bluehole is concerned that they might be copying the experience that "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" is known for.
According to reports, Epic Games did acknowledge that "Fortnite: Battle Royale" was inspired by "PUBG."Bluehole's vice president Chang Han Kim was made aware of the situation, and after sifting through the reports of the fans and seeing the gameplay themselves, they are now contemplating taking further action against Epic Games.
Kim has clarified that the issue is not about the battle royale game mode. Their concern is Epic Games and the misinterpretation they caused as a result of insinuating that the "PUBG" developers were involved in the idea of "Fortnite: Battle Royale."
"What I think is, they should have at least came to us before making it and had a discussion with us," Bluehole's Kim told PC Gamer. "We're going to get some technical support [from Epic], and we're going to work with them to make sure Unreal Engine better supports battle royale gameplay which requires 100 people in one session, and now we're starting to have concerns that they're going to develop new features or improve something in the engine to support that battle royale gameplay, and then use it for their own game mode."
Epic Games' promotion of the upcoming "Fortnite: Battle Royale" has fans thinking that the new game mode is fundamentally connected to that of "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds." Bluehole received feedback that fans were thrilled that they could play "PUBG" on "Fortnite" and there was nothing that Kim could do to spread the word that they were not involved in Epic's game at all.
"Fortnite: Battle Royale" is scheduled to be released for free on Sept. 26 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
