Free Apps for Download: Microsoft Announces Free Microsoft Office Apps for iOS
Though tablets, phablets and smartphones serve their purpose of providing entertainment in the form of games, music and videos, there are some who wish that they could use the device to do some office or school work without having to rely on subpar apps that are readily available for download.
But this week, Microsoft made a surprising move when it announced that Microsoft Office suite for iPad and iPhone is now free. But Android users need not despair, as the company says that Office for Android tablets will be free to use in the near future as well. Starting Nov. 6, those who are reliant on Word, Excel, and Powerpoint will not need an Office 365 subscription to edit documents or store them in a cloud.
In a statement, Microsoft explained its decision to make the Office Apps free.
"With Office on nearly every device, it's incredibly important to us that customers have a consistent experience and the ability to do more—anywhere and everywhere," said Microsoft.
"So starting today, people can create and edit Office content on iPhones, iPads, and soon, Android tablets using Office apps without an Office 365 subscription. Of course Office 365 subscribers will continue to benefit from the full Office experience across devices with advanced editing and collaboration capabilities, unlimited OneDrive storage, Dropbox integration, and a number of other benefits," the company continued.
With this initiative, it appears as though Microsoft is trying to get as much people as possible to use Microsoft Office as it competes with other rival apps. One of these apps is CloudOn, a gesture-based app for editing documents, and Apple's iWork apps, which has long been available for iPad users for free.
