Galaxy Note 3 Vs. Galaxy S5: Spec by Spec Comparison

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was unveiled earlier this week and could end up surpassing the wildly successful Galaxy Note 3 as its highest-selling gadget.

The Note 3 outshined the Galaxy S4 in 2013 and might still have enough extras to pummel its successor. Many argue that the phablet has now become Samsung's finest device, leaving the flagship smartphone that came to prominence a few years back in the dust. So how do these two Samsung powerhouses match up against one another? Here is a spec by spec comparison of the two.

Instead of using the same design, the Note 3 and S5 Samsung chose to move in different directions for each. The fronts of the devices resemble each other, however, the backings are very different. Samsung used its new "glam" perforated back plate on the Galaxy S5 that shines in certain lighting and created a leather like plastic backing for the Note 3. Both look better that what we've seen in the past, but the Note seems to be a bit classier and has garnered positive reviews from most while Samsung's choice on the Galaxy S5 seems to have been disappointing to some.

Speed

The Galaxy S5 packs a 2.5GHz quad-core processor with 2GB RAM while the Galaxy Note 3 comes with a 2.3GHz quad-core chipset with 3GB RAM. The extra gig of RAM gives the Note 3 a bit of an advantage, however, the Galaxy S5 has a processor that packs a bit more of a punch. The Note is basically built to handle many tasks at a time, making it the perfect device for multitasking while the S5 will probably solidify its place as one of the fastest handsets on the market, but not a match for the Note.

Extras

The Galaxy Note 3 features an advanced version of the S Pen with accompanying apps. The Galaxy S5 comes with a Heart Rate Monitor and other modes that cater to those interested in staying fit. The S Pen has always been a fun accessory and works better than ever on the Note 3. The extras on the S5 only cater to a specific audience, making it less interesting. The Note 3 definitely has more widespread appeal in this department.

Camera

The Galaxy Note 3 comes with a 13-megapixel shooter that can capture video in full HD. The Galaxy S5 packs a re-designed 16-megapixel rear camera with a slew of new features including the fastest autofocus on the market, Selective Focus, and High Dynamic Range. This is the most advanced camera Samsung has put together. The Galaxy Note 3's point and shooter is still impressive, but the Galaxy S5 takes it in this area easily.

Conclusion

The Galaxy Note 3 seems to have kept the masses happy while the Galaxy S line is in a place of limbo, lacking the necessary innovation to keep consumers interested. Certain aspects of the S5 are impressive including the camera, but extras that are fitness based lack the widespread appeal that the S Pen has. The hardware on the Note 3 is still quite impressive while the Galaxy S5 presents slight updates. The Galaxy Note 3 is a more well-rounded device and probably still should be considered Samsung's best at this time.
