Galaxy S5 Vs. Moto X: Spec by Spec Comparison

Samsung unveiled the long anticipated Galaxy S5 earlier this week and the device impressed some and disappointed others.

The buzz that surrounded Galaxy S line has been somewhat eclipsed in the last year as differently made Android devices such as the Moto X and HTC One have earned a lot of attention. With Motorola and HTC gearing up to release new devices this year Samsung has a whole lineup to compete against. But how do the older models line-up against the Galaxy S5? Today we'll look at the Moto X and see if it still has what it takes to draw customers away from the S5.

The Galaxy S5 packs a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with 1920 x 1080 resolution. It's basically a slightly bigger version of the screen found on the Galaxy S4. The Moto X comes with a slightly smaller 4.7-inch capacitive touchscreen with 1280 x 720 resolution. Motorola's device has always been slightly behind the rest of the pack when it comes to resolution so it really is no match for the Galaxy S5 in this department. Samsung easily takes this area.

Camera

The Moto X features a 10-megapixel rear shooter that can take pictures with 4320 x 2432 pixels. It also features LED flash, autofocus and geo-tagging. The Galaxy S5 features a 16-megapixel camera with some innovative features such as Selective Focus, Virtual Tour Shot and High Dynamic Range which helps the lens adjust to different lighting conditions to capture the actual color of the picture's subject. Samsung really went all out on this camera aiming to have the finest one in the market. The Moto X packs a pretty good one, but it's tough to beat Samsung here with all of its new features.

Design

The Galaxy S5 features a new "glam" design with perforated backing that shines in certain lighting conditions. The Moto X brought a completely new idea to the market with the Moto Maker self-customization service which allows customers to design the exterior of the device to their liking by choosing different looks. Samsung really disappointed with the lack of ideas this time around and probably should have kept in step with what they did with the Note 3. Motorola takes it in this area.

Software

Thanks to Google's ownership, Motorola was able to have a layout similar to that of the Nexus line with the smooth integration of Android. The Galaxy S5 appears to have the same Touch Wiz style layout that is seen on past Galaxy devices, however, the company claims to have gotten rid of some of the unnecessary software. But event with that, the Moto X is probably the second best Android experience a user can get next to the Nexus, making this area an easy win for Motorola.

Conclusion

The Galaxy S5 packs some pretty impressive hardware including the display, processor and camera, but the lack of innovation holds it back from really wowing tech consumers. The Moto X was a great device that was definitely underrated due to it not having top-of-the-line specs at its release. Sometimes that's just not the most important thing when considering which smartphone to buy so for that reason this battle has to go to the Moto X, which will only get better with the next-gen model.
