'Gambit' news, cast, spoilers: Movie is now without a director

Since the announcement that Fox will take on a solo franchise for X-Men's card-throwing mutant, Gambit, it immediately received mixed reactions. Some have become skeptical why Fox chose to make a film about a lesser known character in the X-Men franchise, but it was countered by others who feel that Gambit is definitely one of the characters that many are hoping to see take on a solo adventure.

After initial rumors in the past month about Channing Tatum apparently backing out of the role, fans looking forward to see the film were assured after Tatum finalized his commitment as Gambit. However, it seems that development for the movie's production may be even held back further as Rupert Wyatt, director of the "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," confirmed to back out of the director's seat.

According to Screen Rant, the news hit after an official date has been set for the movie. Wyatt then further explained his reason for walking away from the film. In his official statement, he said, "I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film."

This has caused a bit of alarm as many think that Wyatt, despite being lesser known than other directors, would have been best to create an original take on the character. 20th Century Fox is looking forward to follow up "Deadpool" within the next year, so if it plans to release on time, it should find a director straight away. Fans' faith in Fox in producing Marvel movies has signifcantly wavered, especially after the epic failure of the "Fantastic Four" reboot, so whoever takes on the director's seat for Gambit should be ready to take on the challenge.

Gambit is now scheduled for release on Oct. 7, 2016.
